Brief Description of PC817C

The PC817C is a widely used optocoupler (opto-isolator) designed to provide electrical isolation between different parts of a circuit by using light to transmit signals. Manufactured by Sharp and other semiconductor companies, the PC817C is commonly found in power supplies, microcontroller interfaces, switching circuits, and industrial automation systems, where galvanic isolation and noise immunity are critical.

The device consists of an infrared LED and a phototransistor housed in a compact 4-pin DIP package. When a current flows through the LED, it emits infrared light, which activates the phototransistor on the output side, allowing current to flow. This optical coupling enables signal transfer while maintaining high electrical isolation—typically rated at 5,000 Vrms—between the input and output sides.

The PC817C is designed for low-speed signal transmission and supports switching frequencies up to a few kHz, making it suitable for digital control signals, relay driving, and zero-cross detection in AC circuits. It operates with input currents as low as 5 mA and is compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems.
