System Operation Modes
Therearesixdifferentmodesofoperationforthemicrocontroller,eachonewithitsown
specialcharacteristicsandwhichcanbechosenaccordingtothespecificperformanceand
powerrequirementsoftheapplication.Therearetwomodesallowingnormaloperationofthe
microcontroller,theNORMALModeandSLOWMode.Theremainingfourmodes,theSLEEP0,
SLEEP1,IDLE0andIDLE1ModeareusedwhenthemicrocontrollerCPUisswitchedoffto
conservepower.

NORMAL Mode
Asthenamesuggeststhisisoneofthemainoperatingmodeswherethemicrocontrollerhasallof
itsfunctionsoperationalandwherethesystemclockisprovidedbyoneofthehighspeedoscillators.
Thismodeoperatesallowingthemicrocontrollertooperatenormallywithaclocksourcewillcome
fromoneofthehighspeedoscillators,eithertheHXT,ERCorHIRCoscillators.Thehighspeed
oscillatorwillhoweverfirstbedividedbyaratiorangingfrom1to64,theactualratiobeingselected
bytheCKS2~CKS0andHLCLKbitsintheSMOD0register.Althoughahighspeedoscillatoris
used,runningthemicrocontrolleratadividedclockratioreducestheoperatingcurrent.
SLOW Mode
Thisisalsoamodewherethemicrocontrolleroperatesnormallyalthoughnowwithaslowerspeed
clocksource.Theclocksourceusedwillbefromoneofthelowspeedoscillators,eithertheLXT
ortheLIRC.Runningthemicrocontrollerinthismodeallowsittorunwithmuchloweroperating
currents.IntheSLOWMode,thefHisoff.
SLEEP0 Mode
TheSLEEPModeisenteredwhenanHALTinstructionisexecutedandwhentheIDLENbitinthe
SMOD0registerislow.IntheSLEEP0modetheCPUwillbestopped,andthefSUBandfSclocks
willbestoppedtoo,andtheWatchdogTimerfunctionisdisabled.Inthismode,theLVDENismust
setto"0".IftheLVDENissetto"1",itwon’tentertheSLEEP0Mode.
SLEEP1 Mode
TheSLEEPModeisenteredwhenanHALTinstructionisexecutedandwhentheIDLENbitinthe
SMOD0registerislow.IntheSLEEP1modetheCPUwillbestopped.HoweverthefSUBandfS
clockswillcontinuetooperateiftheLVDENis"1"ortheWatchdogTimerfunctionisenabledand
ifitsclocksourceischosenviaconfigurationoptiontocomefromthefSUB.
IDLE0 Mode
TheIDLE0ModeisenteredwhenaHALTinstructionisexecutedandwhentheIDLENbitinthe
SMOD0registerishighandtheFSYSONbitintheSMOD1registerislow.IntheIDLE0Modethe
systemoscillatorwillbeinhibitedfromdrivingtheCPUbutsomeperipheralfunctionswillremain
operationalsuchastheWatchdogTimer,TMs,LCDdriver,SPI1andSIM.IntheIDLE0Mode,the
systemoscillatorwillbestopped.IntheIDLE0ModetheWatchdogTimerclock,fS,willeitherbe
onoroffdependinguponthefSclocksource.IfthesourceisfSYS/4thenthefSclockwillbeoff,and
ifthesourcecomesfromfSUBthenfSwillbeon.
