Oscillator Overview Inadditiontobeingthesourceofthemainsystemclocktheoscillatorsalsoprovideclocksources fortheWatchdogTimerandTimeBaseInterrupts.Externaloscillatorsrequiringsomeexternal componentsaswellasfullyintegratedinternaloscillators,requiringnoexternalcomponents,are providedtoformawiderangeofbothfastandslowsystemoscillators.Alloscillatoroptionsare selectedthroughregisterprogramming.Thehigherfrequencyoscillatorsprovidehigherperformance butcarrywithitthedisadvantageofhigherpowerrequirements,whiletheoppositeisofcoursetrue forthelowerfrequencyoscillators.Withthecapabilityofdynamicallyswitchingbetweenfastand slowsystemclock,thesedeviceshavetheflexibilitytooptimizetheperformance/powerratio,a featureespeciallyimportantinpowersensitiveportableapplications. TheactualsourceclockusedforthelowspeedoscillatorsischosenviatheFSSbitintheSCC registerwhileforthehighspeedoscillatorthesourceclockisselectedbytheFHSbitintheSCC register.Thefrequencyoftheslowspeedorhighspeedsystemclockisalsodeterminedusingthe CKS2~CKS0bitsintheSCCregister.Notethattwooscillatorselectionsmustbemadenamelyone highspeedandonelowspeedsystemoscillators.Itisnotpossibletochooseano-oscillatorselection foreitherthehighorlowspeedoscillator. |
